Greg Ewer
Violin
At this very moment …
we would find Greg in the final stages of preparation for a concert with the Magnolia Chamber Ensemble, a musical collective established by a group of longtime musical colleagues originally from the Houston area.
On the CD player …
we’d find Thelonious Monk, the Bad Livers (an avant-garde bluegrass band), Ali Akbar Khan (a north Indian sitarist), Herbie Hancock’s “Headhunters” and Vasa Prihoda, (an early 20th Century Czech violinist).
In the kitchen …
Cliff bars, bagels and frozen pizzas, as well as his favorite recipe, Bhagari Jhinga, shrimp sautéed in black mustard seed and garlic with a spice-laden cream sauce.
On the music stand …
The Locatelli caprices, the Ysayi sonatas, the manuscript of Vivaldi’s Four Season and the viola parts to all of the pieces Magnolia will perform that evening (Greg is actually planning to sub in the viola section sometime soon!).
And on the nightstand …
we’d find a box of old photos of friends and family, a compilation of addresses by Noam Chomsky, a political activist whose areas of concern include the workings of the modern media, globalization and the education system, and a book of poetry by Seamus Heaney.
Before you left …
Greg would be sure to invite you on his next camping trip or for a day of skiing or snowboarding on Mt. Hood. “Growing up in Houston I had nothing around me but concrete; the beauty of the Northwest is one of the main reasons I moved to Portland.”
