McQuillen was reviewing our Presidents Day weekend concerts with pianist Arnaldo Cohen playing Franz Liszt’s Second Piano Concerto. He described the program as “a bit of a smorgasbord,” and perhaps it was, with two works by Liszt as well as a mixture of well-known and unfamiliar works by Copland, Barber and Bizet. 

This could also describe the season we have planned for you. Yes, we are playing what the press likes to describe as “warhorses” – such great and glorious old beasts as Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto and Brahms Third Symphony. We make no apologies for playing some of the best-loved works of the Western canon and for bringing you internationally renowned artists like Joshua Bell, Itzhak Perlman, Lang Lang and Garrick Ohlsson.

Symphony announces La Grande, Cove as site for 2007-2008 Community Music Partnership

Musicians from the Oregon Symphony will immerse themselves in the Eastern Oregon communities of La Grande and Cove this season during the first of two years in a recently announced Community Music Partnership (CMP) between the Symphony, the Cove School District, the La Grande School District, the Eastern Oregon Regional Arts Council and the Cove Community Association. Both communities were selected for the partnership with the Symphony through a competitive application process. CMP funding is provided by The Ford Family Foundation and the Oregon Arts Commission.

When I left Portland for Vienna in late February following the most recent series of performances I conducted, lots of great memories went with me – from the very successful concerts in Portland and Salem (with great work by the orchestra and our soloist, the Brazilian pianist Arnaldo Cohen) to the very successful unveiling of our 2008-09 season.

What convinced you that you wanted a career in music?
My own heart. My parents are both musicians, so I grew up immersed in music and on track to be a musician. I was headed to college to major in psychology when late in my senior year I had a flash forward to a picture that didn't seem right. I then realized that music had to be my future.
