Portland, Ore. … The fate of classical music has been a popular topic over the past few years. As the Oregon Symphony continues its new Inside the Score Series, the spotlight will be on a composer who contemplated the notion more than a century ago and used his symphonies as a means to keep it alive.
On Sunday, January 14 at 2 p.m. in the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, Music Director Carlos Kalmar and the Symphony will take a closer look at Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 4, considered by many to be his best work.
“Gigantic, altogether a law unto itself; exudes unparalleled energy from first note to last,” was one of the initial responses to Brahms’ passionate composition. His desire to write symphonic music stemmed partly from his notion that the genre was lapsing into mediocrity after the great heights it reached with Beethoven.
Designed for both newcomers and aficionados alike, Inside the Score explores
the historical and cultural perspectives of the composer’s life and
times through increased interaction between audience members, the conductor
and musicians. The series lend a ‘behind the scenes’ look
at a piece of music that might not be accessible through their
own initial research.
Tickets are $16 to $55 and may be purchased at the Oregon Symphony Ticket Office, located at 923 S.W. Washington.
