FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SINGLE TICKETS FOR SYMPHONY’S FIRST TWO CLASSICAL CONCERTS AND FIRST POPS CONCERT ON SALE MONDAY, JULY 31

Portland, Ore. … Single tickets to three of the Oregon Symphony’s most anticipated 2006-2007 concerts, including the first Classical concert with piano superstar Garrick Ohlsson playing Beethoven’s “Emperor” Concerto and the opening Pops concert featuring the always-popular Pointer Sisters, will be available to the general public in advance of general ticket sales, beginning Monday, July 31 at 9 a.m.  Single tickets for all remaining Symphony concerts will go on sale as scheduled on Monday, Aug. 21.

“This is a special opportunity for concertgoers to make sure they get tickets to our opening Classical and Pops concerts,” said Michael Kosmala, Vice President of Marketing and Community Engagement.  “We expect these concerts to sell out quickly.”

In addition to the Beethoven, the first Classical series concert of the new season, on Saturday, Sept. 16, at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, Sept. 17, at 7:30 p.m.; and Monday, Sept. 18, at 8 p.m. will feature two audience favorites by Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky: “Pictures at an Exhibition” and “Night on Bald Mountain.”  The Pops series opens on Saturday, Oct. 7, at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, Oct. 8, at 3 p.m.; and Monday, Oct. 9, at 7:30 p.m. with ’70s-‘80s vocal trio The Pointer Sisters, who will sing many of the hits that propelled them into music history, including “I’m So Excited,” “Jump For My Love” and “Slow Hand.”

On Saturday, Sept. 23, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 24, at 2 p.m., Kalmar and the orchestra will present the second opening Classical concert featuring Strauss’ tone poem “Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks” and Mendelssohn’s “Italian” Symphony, along with a performance of the rarely heard Piano Concerto No. 4 by Rachmaninoff with pianist Valentina Lisitsa, of whom the Baltimore Sun wrote, “…Lisitsa is a gigantic talent.  She has infallible fingers, imagination, and a control of dynamics—from the softest to the loudest sounds—[that is] little short of electrifying.”

Beginning this season, Symphony patrons can take advantage of the Symphony’s newly expanded Web site to purchase their tickets online direct from the Symphony.  “With this new service, we think our patrons will find it easier and more convenient to do all their business with us, from getting information about concerts and ticket prices to ticket purchases,” said Kosmala.
